A novel initiative by the Department of Social Defence with the support of Chennai Mission, the Corporate Social Responsiblity (CSR) Unit of Oriental Cuisines Pvt. Ltd. ( www.orientalgroup.in ) the Home inmates are being trained to make bakery products.
Banyan, a NGO working for mentally-ill destitute women, would jointly run the coffee shop and train the children in selling the products. While the government has invested Rs 9 lakh towards building works and training equipment, Chennai Mission has so far contributed Rs 6 lakh.
Initially, 20 children would be trained and Rs 1,500 paid as stipend every month during the training period. Children showed interest in learning the nuances of preparing bakery items, said Oriental Cuisines director M Mahadevan. “The inmates preferred to stay in the observation home for training, despite being granted bail,” he noted and added, “Job placements will also be arranged for them.” Bakery products, including cakes, doughnuts, pastas, sandwiches, vegetable puffs, are sold at nominal prices.

If the art of living a steadfast lifestyle has only been an aspiration for a convict, its time people became cognizant of the fact that it has begun to encrust the lives of a few deserving inmates of the Puzhal Prison. This project helps inmates to earn and equip themselves in the professional skill of baking, enabling them to be gainfully employed once they are released from the prison. This unpretentious effort by Chennai Mission in association with a few like-minded organizations such as Banyan, The Spastic Society and Little Drops feeds close to 10,000 underprivileged children. |
