'Entrepreneurship great idea during slowdown
CHENNAI: You and I might wonder what really could come out of an investment of Rs 400. But, it was the seed money with which M Mahadevan ventured into his maiden bakery business two decades ago, now known to everyone as Hot Breads and built the Oriental Cuisine empire.
"I came to Chennai from Udumalpet with just Rs 400 in my pocket. I started business with 4 chefs," Mr Mahadevan began, setting the tone for his talk on ‘Spice it up: Creating a Food Business’ at an ET in Campus event at MOP Vaishnav College for women in the city on Wednesday.

MAHADEVAN began his journey to success with very humble beginnings. His grit and focus saw him through the grimmest times. Now, at the helm of a mammoth chain of hotels and restaurants, he says “It would be my humble request to all the city folk to lend a helping hand. Act of kindness: There is nothing like the joy of giving. And a press meet held recently to an-nounce the ‘Joy Of Giving Week’, conceptualised by Give India (from September 27-October 3), proved just that. Making their gracious presence felt were Suriya and Shriya Saran, who had lots to say! “I have not slept well in the last fewdays. I feel that I have got more than I deserve and hence, I have decided to give back to the society.
Giving cheques to an NGO or other organisations is a small gesture which everyone does. From now on, I will spend a day every month with the under privi-leged children of the society.I think it is an ideal way to ease my restlessness and find solace,” said Suriya.

‘Slice of freedom'
OFFBEAT They may be inmates of the Puzhal jail but their spirit of freedom is evident as they bake bread under the guidance of chefs from a leading city bakery, says SHONALI MUTHALALY
The road to jail is long and winding. And, I don’t meanin a metaphorical sense. Puzhal jail is in Red Hills, a good 45 minutes from the heart of the city. From outside, it looks appropriately forbidding, with high gates, armed guards and soarings entry towers. Inside, there are pink flowers, cheerful ‘Welcome’ signs and prisoners, in white shorts, shirts and sneakers, nodding hello. Sprawling Puzhal jail, holds about 500 ‘lifers’, who are prisoners condemned to life imprisonment (14 years), besides about 250 long and short-term prisoners. .
